Benedict Mette-Starke
Benedict Mette-Starke ist Doktorand in der Arbeitsgruppe Ethnologie mit Schwerpunkt Politische Anthropologie. Er studierte an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg Ethnologie und Economics (B.A.). Seinen Master in Ethnologie absolvierte er ebenfalls in Heidelberg und am University College London. Im Rahmen seiner Masterarbeit setzte er sich mit dem Fairphone und seinem Gebrauch auseinander. Er untersuchte, wie sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Handy und seiner Ethik eine vielfältige ‘Community’ darum bildete.
Benedict Mette-Starkes Dissertation (Arbeitstitel: New Nets of Politics: Digital Rights Activism in Myanmar and its Ethics) untersucht den Digitalrechtsaktivismus der sich in Myanmar parallel zu den Reformen zwischen 2007 und 2021 entwickelte. Die Dissertation basiert vornehmlich auf ethnographischer Feldforschung in Yangon 2019 und 2020, u.a. ergänzt durch Online-Forschung und anhaltendem Austausch mit Forschungspartner:innen. Die Dissertation zeigt auf, wie sich Digitalrechtsaktivismus in Myanmar bildet. Sie zeigt auf, dass myanmar Digitalrechtsaktivist:innen Infrastrukturen sowohl für ihre Aktionen nutzen als auch gleichzeitig selektiv versuchen, vornehmlich digitale und rechtliche Infrastrukturen dabei umzugestalten. Das Internet verspricht neue Formen von Öffentlichkeit. Diese neuen Formen haben in Myanmar eine besondere Bedeutung, da sie einen Ort jenseits alter politischer Verflechtungen und staatlicher Überwachung ermöglichten. Doch obwohl das Internet Freiheit verspricht reproduziert es Ungleichheiten. So müssen Aktivist:innen praktisch und ethisch abwägen, z.B. welche Gerichtsfälle sie dokumentieren, wen sie zur Verantwortung ziehen und wie, was sie öffentlich ansprechen und worüber sie schweigen. Die Arbeit argumentiert, dass myanmar Digitalrechtsaktivist:innen, sei es durch ihr Wissen und ihre Fähigkeiten oder durch ihre Kritik an globalen Akteur:innen wie Meta, das Politische nicht nur für Myanmar neu definieren. Sie verortet myanmar Digitalrechtsaktivismus innerhalb sozial- und kulturanthropologischer Forschung zu Aktivismus und Infrastrukturen. Neben der unverkennbaren Verortung in der Medienanthropologie arbeitet die Dissertation auch Bezüge zu Fragen nach Verantwortung und Freiheit in der Anthropologie der Ethik auf.
