Documentation of the Student Survey in Germany

The reporting includes a main report about the specific survey (long and short version), study quality indicators, basic tables, and analysis focussing on the special topics. The structure and form of reporting will be briefly explained below.

Basic Tables

In order for the results of the surveys to be available as early as possible to the higher education policy makers, e.g. the participating universities and other interested parties, it is necessary to first provide a basic count of the respective survey according to the type of higher education institutions (universities and universities for applied sciences).
The participating 28 universities are provided tables with indicators on teaching situation and quality of study, which are categorized by the subject groups taught at the respective higher education institution. At the higher education institutions, this information base has found entrance into internal discussions concerning the teaching evaluation and developments in higher education.

Data almanac

The Data Almanac contains a more complex evaluation since it covers the entire survey time grouped thematically. Based on the almanac data, both the general developments in universities and universities of applied sciences and the differences between the subject groups, are reflected in an understandable manner.

Main reports

Main report (long and short version) - A report, titled “study situation and students' orientation” is provided in a long and in a short version for each survey. It provides a differentiated insight into the findings of the current survey and the developments of the time series without including all the questions contained in each of the survey instruments.

Thematic Reports

In each survey, important and current issues are discussed in depth. Some of the topics in the past were „Students and Politics in Unified Germany” (1994); „Universities of Applied Sciences in the New Federal States (Bundesländer) “; and „Study of Engineering and Job Perspectives“ (1998).

Based on the 1997/98 student surveys, two key reports developed under the title "Career Choice, Career Opportunities and Business Start-ups" (BMBF: Bonn 2001), and "Students and the Virtual University" (AG Hochschulforschung, Konstanz 2000).

In 2006, problems of young scientists were addressed in a special report titled "Young Scientists among Students" (BMBF, 2006) and in 2008 a special publication focused on "Changes in Political Orientations and Social Values of Students."

The conversion of multiple fields of study in the Bologna two-tiered study model (Bachelor/Master) was based on four different surveys: Evaluating Student Survey (2007), Study Quality Monitor (2007 and 2008), the European Higher Education Area Evaluated (2008), and a first interim balance titled "Bachelor Students - Experiences in Study and Teaching "(2009).
