In Myanmar, ever since the 'opening' of the isolationist country, public debates are increasingly held with reference to cultural heritage. The national heritage-regime for a long time legitimized extant power by means of a harmony ideology. Today, however, other actors also try to postulate the possibilities and directions of social progress in reference to heritage. The investigation of rhetorical strategies within this struggle for sovereignty of interpretation over the past, reveals the connection of governance, social change, and the interplay of global and local discourses.
