Scientific career

Philipp Schäfer studied Cultural Sciences with a focus on Economics and Sociology at Leuphana University Lüneburg, Université Lumière Lyon 2 and Leipzig University. In his sociological Master's thesis he did ethnographic research on spatial and capital structures as well as on positioning strategies of asylum-seeking persons in municipal accommodation centres in Leipzig, East Germany. Since 2014, Philipp Schäfer is a research assistant and Ph.D. candidate at the Chair for Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Konstanz.

In his dissertation, Philipp Schäfer analyses the governing of forced migration in urban asylum regimes. The project is part of the PhD program “Europe in the globalised world”. It is funded by the Centre of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration" and by the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.

empirical cultural sociology, field theory, refugee studies, (local) migration regimes, (post-)migration, urban spaces, sociology of everyday life, conflict cultures, sociological ethnography
