Prosecuting Myanmar military’s crimes in Germany

On January 24, 2023, the human rights organisation Fortify Rights filed a criminal complaint in Germany under the principle of universal jurisdiction against senior Myanmar military generals and others for atrocity crimes. One of the 16 complainants is PhD student Nickey Diamond.

Nickey Diamond, a former human rights researcher for Fortify Rights, is a member of the Working Group “Social and Political Anthropology” at the University of Konstanz. Diamond and his family had to flee Myanmar after the military attempted a coup on February 1, 2021. As a fellow of the Hilde Domin-Programme which supports scholars at risk, he is now writing his PhD thesis on “Anti-Muslim hate speech in Myanmar” under the supervision of Prof. Judith Beyer while continuing his activist and human rights-related work from exile.

"We trust in Germany to open an investigation and seek justice for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed by the military and its leaders in Myanmar,” he said during Fortify Right’s press conference on January 24, 2023.
